Understanding your NI contributions

What is NI?

Cotisations Sociales is a tax paid by employees and employers. It funds the state pension, unemployment benefits, and certain other welfare benefits.

Les employés paient à partir de leur salaire; les employeurs paient séparément en plus des salaires.

  • €50,271+: 2%
  • Lower threshold: €12,570

Did You Know?

Understanding Your Personal Allowance

How the PA works and the high earner taper

Standard PA

The standard Personal Allowance for 2025 is €12,570. This is the amount of income everyone can earn tax-free.

Example: If you earn €35,000, only €22,430 is taxable (€35,000 - €12,570).

High Earner Taper

For every €2 you earn above €100,000, your Personal Allowance is reduced by €1.
